Magistral preparations – those produced by compounding pharmacies that are customised for individual patients – are a common format in which medical cannabis patients receive their cannabis-based medicines. The format is appealing to patients and prescribing doctors because it allows them flexibility to tailor the prescription to a specific patient’s needs, including customising the cannabinoid profile and method of intake.
Magistral preparations also represent a unique opportunity for cannabis producers to provide raw materials more directly to pharmacies. This can provide a legal pathway to market for flowers, extracts, and resins without needing to get marketing authorisation, which may require significant time and money. In fact, in some countries, magistral preparations are the only legal pathway for unapproved medical cannabis products.
This report examines the regulation of magistral preparations in many of the countries across the world that allow and regulate them. This is not an exhaustive list of countries that permit them as a format, but rather an examination of some of the largest markets that have established regulations for them.
