German conservatives poised for power but cannabis stance at odds with coalition

As the centre-right Christian Democratic Union/Christian Social Union in Bavaria (CDU/CSU) prepares for a potential return to power in Germany, its stance on cannabis legalisation might be a point of contention with other coalition partners.

The CDU/CSU’s cannabis stance will be central to shaping future policies. While the conservative bloc advocates for abolishing the Cannabis Act, the SDP sees cannabis regulation as a pragmatic step forward, in accordance with European law, promising economic benefits, safer consumption and a crackdown on illegal markets.
