Regulatory brief: France takes different approach to legalising medical cannabis

France is poised to legalise medical cannabis but will take a different approach than its fellow European nations; it intends to include cannabis in its pre-existing pharmaceutical regulatory framework.

In other words, there will not be a separate framework for medical cannabis, as many other countries who have legalised it usually create.

Such an approach has some advantages and disadvantages – some known and some not yet known. On the positive side, France could establish stability and longevity by following a regulatory path that is already established. On the negative end, its restrictive nature will not likely allow for wide patient access in the short term.
